Being on your friend's island, you can see the “GIFTS” tab in the bottom right corner, where you can find useful gifts for your friends. These gifts give you light or dark runes, when you place them on your friend’s land.

 

It is also possible to get light and dark runes as a bonus for completed orders in the Food Stall and the Tavern.
